Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
