The feeling at their home stadium was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or did there exist a thread holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, but then he publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Roman club appeared equally disorganized during matches as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or imploding.
The Youngster's Surprising Presence
A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
Uncovering His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
